How long does it take to make a new e-learning course?

How long is a piece of string? Sorry we shouldn’t be so flippant! The answer to this question really depends on what you want. If a course is going to be 30 minutes long with top-notch animation and video, then it could easily take months to make. If the course is only going to be 5 minutes long, then it could be done in a matter of weeks. It will also depend on the amount of information you have to hand and if you’ve got people on hand to understand the topic you’re looking to explore.

We would say that, on average if you are looking to create a course of around 5-10 minutes, with a decent amount of video screen flow, then you can create this in a few weeks (if not less). Of course, don’t forget you may need to add in a voice-over, extra activities or blended learning. All of which can add to the production timescales. If you’re aiming for something more complicated – perhaps combining video with some animation – then we’d extend the timescales out to around 6 to 8 weeks.
